Illinois Compiled Statutes

In legal mumbo jumbo, ILCS has meaning.  Every subject that you'll study has it own "buzz words" which are usually made so that other people don't know what you're talking about.  It's kind of like a clandestine code known only to the users who create and propagate its use for others of the same liking.

In mathematics we have the null space or some finite dimensional vector space.  Sound familiar?   Probably not.  However, the words that you don't recognize are the "buzz words" of math.

The legal profession uses code that appears in various places.  ILCS is one such code or buzz word.

Here is a breakdown of what it refers to:

IL stands for the State of Illinois

C stands for Compiled

S stands for Statutes

Melt it all together and you have the IL linois Compiled Statutes.

Election code is found in a specific Chapter of the ILCS.

There are many chapters to the ILCS and election code is but one.  Its number is 10.

So, the legal reference to election code starts with 10 ILCS

One would read this as Chapter 10 of the Illinois Compiled Statutes.

Chapters have Acts and even subsections called Articles

Here is a brief listing of just a few items:

Chapter 10 - Elections

Act 5 Election Code

Article 1 - General Provisions

Section

5/1-1 Short title.

5/1-2 Continuation of prior laws.

5/1-3 Definitions

etc.

Now to reference a particular item, we would use the information found above and write 10 ILCS followed by whatever section you want to talk about.

So, if we wanted to talk about the definitions that appear in Article 1, we would use 5/1-3 to reference those definitions and then write:

10 ILCS 5/1-3

How many Acts are there?

Most of the election code for the State of Illinois appear in Act 5.  There are 45 Articles contained with this Act.

Least we forget....

These days everyone has to put a disclaimer on everything.  Sad really but just in case there is someone out there that might want to say that we are practicing law without a license to do so, we provide the following disclaimer:

This information is not to be construed as legal advice, which we leave to those who have a legal practice.

Did you ever think why they call it a practice?  One would think that after a couple hundred years of doing whatever it is they do, they would have perfected it.  Maybe they should get a new "buzz word" added to their reparatory discourse and call themselves legal practitioners?   Just a thought.

If you need legal advice, consult with a good attorney.  If possible, make sure you do a background check on them!  If they do not do as you instruct or somehow might violate the "rules" then you can bring them before the body that is allegedly independent but composed mostly of lawyers.  Some have actually had their license suspended, only to get it back a few years later.

If you happen to see Edward Voci, please ask him to forward the itemization of how he spend my money.  I've asked five times without any response.  Also, ask him why he lied to a Federal judge?
